Animals » The reproduction of bats, and in particular that of the common bat, does not happen “like dad in mom”. Indeed, the Department of Ecology and Evolution of the University of Lausanne and the Vaud Cantonal Museum of Natural Sciences have discovered a new mode of mating, without penetration, in mammals. The results of this study, carried out in collaboration with enthusiasts and academicians from Ukraine, the Netherlands, Poland and Germany, will be published in the journal Current Biology.
The common serotinus (Eptesicus serotinus) is one of around thirty species of bats established in Switzerland. Considered threatened in our country, it is notably installed in a colony in Grolley, in the canton of Fribourg. “The common serotine is insectivorous and has a larger size than average with a body of around ten centimeters and a wingspan of 30 to 40 centimeters,” explains Nicolas Fasel, biologist and colleague.
