Benjamin Mendy Suing Manchester City for Unpaid Wages and Legal Setbacks: Latest Updates

2023-11-20 17:08:21

Benjamin Mendy has initiated proceedings before the British courts once morest Manchester City. The former left-back of the English club might receive several million euros due to unpaid wages during his legal setbacks and during his two trials for rape and sexual assault.

Found not guilty of rape and sexual assault during two separate trials, Benjamin Mendy is gradually seeking to return to a normal life. After six years in England, the left-back bounced back in Lorient during the summer. But the 2018 world champion does not intend to let Manchester City get away without paying him numerous salary arrears.

According to information from Sky Sports, Benjamin Mendy filed a complaint once morest his former club. The French defender has initiated legal proceedings with the Employment Tribunal, the equivalent of the French industrial tribunal, in order to assert his rights. The French international (10 caps) attacked Manchester City due to salary deductions made following his indictment for rape and sexual assault in 2021.

Mendy did not receive his salary for two seasons

Not guilty in the eyes of British justice, Benjamin Mendy was therefore cleared of all the accusations launched once morest him following two highly publicized trials across the Channel. Deprived of salary by the Skyblues between September 2021 and June 2023 (the end of his contract), the left back is therefore seeking to recover the amounts not paid by his former team during this period. Master Nick De Marco confirmed to the English media that he had initiated legal proceedings.

“Nick De Marco represents former Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy in a multi-million pound claim for unauthorized salary deductions,” the Frenchman’s lawyer said in a statement sent to the press. “Manchester City did not pay any wages to Mr. Mendy from September 2021, following Mr. Mendy was charged with various offenses for which he was later acquitted, until the end of his contract in June 2023. The complaint will be referred to the Employment Tribunal.”

Mendy might receive more than 10 million euros

Arriving at Manchester City in 2017 from AS Monaco, Benjamin Mendy played a total of 75 matches with the team coached by Pep Guardiola. After four first seasons disrupted by physical problems, the left-back played his last match with the Skyblues in August 2021, a few weeks before his placement in pre-trial detention and then his indictment for rape and sexual assault.

If the total amount has not leaked, Benjamin Mendy might therefore receive all the salaries not paid for almost two years, or almost 11.5 million euros. Returning to France this summer, the full-back is looking to relaunch with Lorient. But due to a lack of rhythm linked to his long period away from the field, the defender made do with three appearances in Ligue 1 (78 minutes) with the Merlus.
