Step-son of Vincent Lacoste in Le Temps d’aimer, Paul Beaurepaire, 22, stands out as a talent to follow. Meeting before entering orbit.
You grew up in Nantes, in a family of salespeople. What was your first contact with acting?
Paul Beaurepaire: I grew up north of Nantes, to be exact, in the small town of Treillières. My mother enrolled me in a theater class when I was eight and I stayed there until I was 18. I had a great teacher and I played lots of roles, including Merlin the Enchanter… I very quickly felt that it was for me a real place of expression and emotion.
“I MANAGED TO MAKE THE AUDIENCE LAUGH. MY SECRET ? I HAD WORKED…”
What kind of teenager were you?
I was very inspired by YouTubers. I started making Vines in my garden, with my friends, I played characters, I invented roles. At 16, I discovered stand-up and told myself that’s what I wanted to do. I posted my videos on YouTube and I went to Comedy Clubs, with my lyrics. I wrote jokes and I was inspired by Roman Freyssinet, Baptiste Lecaplain, and especially the YouTuber Mister V. My first time on an open stage, at 16, I failed badly, because it’s hard to make people laugh Older people don’t necessarily have the same sense of humor. The guy on stage asked me to come back the next day and there, I managed to make the audience laugh, I even won a prize. The secret ? I had worked!
Were you a rap fan?
I listen to music all the time, it’s very important to me. I grew up with rap and I also make music. I started at 17, I needed to create. I wrote and recorded in my home studio, with a small microphone lent to me by a friend, and a box of Converse shoes to hold the microphone. I wanted to convey emotions through music. So I taught myself how to rap, how to record myself, how to mix. My inspirations were still Mister V. I didn’t put anything on the Internet, but now I’m starting to post. I also did break dancing from the age of eleven to fifteen. I had battles with people from my dance class. I really liked it, I learned to control my body, which is essential for playing.
To become an actor, did you take the Florent course?
I passed the baccalaureate and the free class exam at Cours Florent at the same time. I knew it was happening in Paris. My mother told me that if I passed the exam, I would go and live in Paris and I got it. The free class is free, but it’s very selective: there were 2000 of us, I think, and they take ten girls and ten boys. I presented a burlesque scene from Labiche and an extract from Chekhov, the forest monologue of Uncle Vania. At Cours Florent, the training is very intense, we work a lot. I stayed there for two years, I played Hamlet, Chekhov’s The Seagull…
What were your first roles?
I quickly went through castings, but it didn’t work out too well at first. Then I landed a small role in Katell Quillévéré’s series, The World of Tomorrow, on NTM, that of Sébastien Farran, their manager.
Terror Seb !
Yeah (he bursts out laughing). I haven’t met him but I briefly met JoeyStarr, who is very nice and who said to me “I hear you’re a good actor?” “. You see me in episodes five and six. Even though it was too short, it was a great experience. I followed this up with a very small role in My Crime by François Ozon. You don’t have to go pee, otherwise you’ll miss my appearance! I wondered if I wasn’t going to stop, because I’m very impatient… and I passed the casting for Le Temps d’aimer. I landed a small role but following a withdrawal, the role of Anaïs Demoustier’s son, and therefore Vincent Lacoste’s stepson, became available. I knew this role was for me and I went for it, it was the chance of a lifetime! I had eight days of filming, and I loved playing this complex, introverted, shy character who can’t express his emotions; Quite the opposite! In the movie, I’m supposed to be sixteen, so we cheated a little with the makeup.
The film was selected at Cannes.
It was great. We had a warm welcome. I climbed the Steps with Anaïs and Vincent, we had a great laugh. The audience applauded a lot following the screening and I think Katell Quillévéré was very happy.
What are your projects ?
I’m starring in the new François Ozon, a great role, but I’m not allowed to say anything (the film should be called When Autumn Comes, with Hélène Vincent and Josiane Balasko, editor’s note). I also starred in the science fiction film Planète B, by Aude-Léa Rapin, with Adèle Exarchopoulos, a role that left an impression on me. But hey, I still have everything to prove, I have to make good choices, act in good films.
Which actors inspire you?
I really like American actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Heath Ledger or Daniel Day-Lewis. It’s amazing how Daniel Day-Lewis moves in There will be Blood.
And now the most important question, what are you wearing, a football jersey?
This is the jersey of a Mexican team, Club América, with the name of goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa on the back. What do you mean you’re not fans? (laughs) It’s especially the jersey of my big brother, who is a goalkeeper. That’s why I wear it.
