What is konjac?

Konjac is a perennial plant native to Asia in which we are interested for its tuberous rhizome (underground stem serving as a reserve for the plant itself). Inside the latter, we find a kind of paste used to make noodles, rice or konjac capsules. Low in calories, sans gluten et rich in fiberit is recommended for people who want to lose weight or those who suffer from diabetes, obesity, or allergic to gluten.

What are the benefits of konjac?

Mainly consumed in the form of pasta or noodles, konjac has many advantages, it:

  • promotes weight loss: very low in calories (4 to 8 calories per 100 g)1, konjac is made up of 95% water, it also contains a hydrophilic fiber, glucomannan. This has the capacity to absorb a large volume of water and fill the stomach, causing a rapid feeling of fullness and, in fact, a reduction in appetite.
  • helps regulate blood sugar : glucomannan captures glucose before it is absorbed into the blood and evacuates it directly in the stools,
  • helps fight constipation : glucomannan has a regulatory effect on intestinal transit and promotes the digestion of non-digestible dietary fibers by the small intestine.
  • helps regulate cholesterol : konjac has a cholesterol-lowering property. That is to say, it reduces the absorption of cholesterol, here in the central part of the small intestine.

What are the disadvantages of konjac?

You have to be careful in certain cases because ingesting konjac requires precautions:

  • high consumption of konjac can lead to nutrient, vitamin and mineral deficiencies because its value in vitamins and carbohydrates is very low or even non-existent,
  • the effect on satiety is momentary,
  • nutritionally, konjac is less interesting than pasta, which contains iron and carbohydrates like cereal foods.
  • Due to its high fiber content, konjac can cause digestive problems such as bloating, gas or even mild diarrhea…

You can find konjac in supermarkets, Asian grocery stores or even on the internet. It is mainly sold in the form of noodles or rice. Without seasoning, it seems bland! It is best combined with sauce, vegetables, meat or even fish.. Very practical and quick, just cook it for 1 to 2 minutes in boiling water. It also exists in the form of capsules. In this case, it is used for a treatment of one or more months in order to lose the desired pounds.
