From January 1, 2024, tobacco prices in Belgium will increase by 25%, or an average of around €2 for a pack of cigarettes. The pack of 26 classic Marlboros will thus go from €8 currently to €10, a symbolic milestone. Also count +4€ for 100g of smoking tobacco, indicates Sudinfo.
For comparison, the Marlboro XL Classic Red (pack of 25) is sold for €14.40 in France. Which means that even if buying cigarettes in Belgium will soon be less attractive, it will remain advantageous for French smokers, who will always “save” more than 4 euros on a pack by buying it in Belgium.
“We want to create a tobacco-free generation”
To fight once morest smoking, Belgium is working hard. A cash plan regarding ten measurements was validated on Friday by the Council of Ministers and will soon be submitted to a vote by the Chamber. Among which is a significant increase in price. Then from January 2025, traders will no longer be able to display tobacco sales points and will have to hide cigarettes in a separate room, drawer or cupboard. Also from 2025, temporary points of sale, which can still be found, for example, at music festivals in Belgium, will be banned.
From July 1, 2025, supermarkets of more than 400m² will no longer be able to sell tobacco products, adds Sudinfo. This concerns, for example, Colruyt, Carrefour and the “big” Delhaize, whose surface areas exceed this fixed limit. Horeca establishments will, however, be able to continue to sell them, but the smoking areas of these establishments will be prohibited to minors. “ This is an important moment. We want to create a new tobacco-free generation, and to protect the health of our young people, our children, we want to reduce their access to and contact with tobacco products. », clearly stated the Belgian minister, in charge of the plan.
