Flobecq Wolf Park: Permit Application for Tourist Attraction and Wildlife Enclosure

2023-11-19 16:19:35

Will there soon be a wolf park in Flobecq? A new permit application was in any case submitted two years following the previous attempt. The public inquiry which ended on Saturday concerns the creation of an enclosure for a pack of six wolves and the construction of cabins to accommodate tourists at the Mont de Rode sand pit, in the Bois de la Houppe.

The project led by Tony Fort aims to promote the private site by creating a tourist activity. But he faces determined opponents: local residents but also the Flemish Climaxi association. They believe in particular that the presence of the wolf in captivity will create nuisance and have an impact on biodiversity near a Natura 2000 classified area. Arguments which were heard during the first attempt to make the project a reality in 2021: administration and ministers Borsus and Tellier then decided to reject it.

The file therefore returns two years later. It will be the subject of a public meeting in the coming weeks. The commune of Flobecq will then take a position, and there is not much suspense as to the opinion it will give. Flobec mayor Philippe Mettens is in fact in favor of the creation of this tourist project, preferring, he says, to see wolves in the sand pit than the return of an extraction activity which, according to him, would cause much more nuisance.

Opponents of the tourist project retort that it is impossible for the place to become an extraction zone once more. It will therefore be up to the delegated official and ministers to decide in the coming months.
