For several weeks, rumors have been multiplying regarding the next graphics cards from AMD. This summer some salivated as we talked regarding an RX 8900 XTX with an ambitious design (Navi 41) combining up to 10 disaggregated chips. A few weeks later, there was a cold shower with a contradictory rumor claiming that the high-end was simply abandoned in order to concentrate on the mid-range using only monolithic matrices.
Will the family of graphics cards around RDNA4 be satisfied with the mid-range?
RDNA4: AMD prefers to focus on the mid-range?
The latest leaks show an RDNA4 family bringing few changes compared to the current generation. If we listening to MLD, the future high-end AMD should certainly be faster than the Radeon RX 7900 XT, but it would be content to position itself simply as an alternative to the next RTX 4080 Super. AMD would thus choose to focus its efforts only on the mid-range, by optimizing its performance in raytracing, by accelerating on FSR and above all by offering cards with a more aggressive price positioning thanks to a controlled and more economical design. So obviously this doesn’t really make us dream, but when we see the prices of the RTX 4070 to 4080 we say to ourselves that a place really exists in this area.
We are only at rumor stage and we will have to see how AMD will communicate in the coming weeks (perhaps in January at CES). However, if we take a step back, the price argument has clearly been a key subject in the mid/high range for many months. Beating the RTX 4090 is undoubtedly good for the image but not necessarily for making money. Let’s keep in mind that AMD like Intel should arrive in 2024 with a new range while, for the moment, Nvidia, apart from “Super” Refresh, should keep its RTX 40s.
