A demonstration calling for an end to violence in Gaza organized by the group “Jews and Palestinians for Peace” brought together more than 2,000 people in Cologne, Germany, on Sunday, under the slogan “Solidarity with all those affected by the Israel-Palestine war “.

The organization had announced an event bringing together 1,000 people, but it ended up attracting twice as many people, a police spokesperson said. The organizers speak of around 3,000 demonstrators.

The two women behind the action, Kristina Bublevskaya and Zeynep Karaosman, are of Jewish and Palestinian origin respectively. They explained that they wanted to provide support to the civilian populations affected by the war.

A spokeswoman for the organization described the atmosphere at the event as “extremely good”. The wearing of flags had been explicitly discouraged. “There are no camps. We want peace,” she said.

In Dusseldorf, more than a thousand people took part in a peaceful pro-Palestinian rally. According to the police, the march bringing together more than 1,500 demonstrators crossed the city center to reach parliament without incident.
