Brussels Airlines Strike Notice: Impact on Flights and Passenger Rights

It’s been in the air for a while, and it’s official since Friday: strikes are expected at Brussels Airlines in the coming weeks. An indefinite strike notice has in fact been filed as a united front by the unions. “We have filed a strike notice which takes effect from November 23,” confirmed Didier Lebbe, CNE permanent secretary, on Friday. It’s the law ; we have seven days before a notice takes effect. From November 23, we can therefore go on strike at any time.”

There are therefore some disruptions to be expected in view of the end-of-year holidays. For its part, Testachats calls on unions to warn passengers as quickly as possible. “We ask that the dates of the strike days be disclosed as quickly as possible to passengers so that they can organize themselves during this particularly sensitive period of the end-of-year holidays, during which many people travel to join their family,” reacts Julie Frère, spokesperson for Testachats.

Brussels Airlines cabin crew file strike notice from November 23: “we’re not doing this for fun!”

Preventing as quickly as possible also has an impact on the wallet, recalls Testachats. “We remind you that in the event of cancellation more than two weeks before flight departure, passengers have the right to be offered either an alternative flight or a refund. If the cancellation takes place less than two weeks before the scheduled departure, in addition to the alternative flight or refund, passengers are also entitled to financial compensation ranging from €250 to €600 depending on the distance to be covered by the flight. Strikes by airline staff are not considered exceptional circumstances.”

As a reminder, the unions speak of “an accumulation of errors on the part of management. The staff are fed up and have let us know on numerous occasions in recent weeks, says Didier Lebbe. Management put the knife to the throat of staff during the health crisis of 2020. There is talk of the dismissal of 1,000 people and a reduction in working hours for others, with a loss of salary of around 15%. At the time, we were talking regarding a recovery in the airline sector for 2025, but this recovery has already taken place in 2022! However, working and salary conditions have not changed while the company proudly announces profits.”
