RAPID CITY, S.D. – A big second half from the Augustana men’s basketball team lifted it to victory Saturday at the East/West Challenge in Rapid City, S.D.. The Vikings defeated South Dakota Mines, 76-70. AU moved to 3-1 on the early season.
Akoi Akoi poured in a game-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting including five from 3-point range. Isaac Fink tallied 18 points and Jaden Graves chipped in with 10 points to make it a trio of Vikings in double-digit scoring.
After trailing for the first two and a half minutes of the game, the Vikings took the lead and did not look back. They controlled the glass with 24 rebounds compared to the Hardrockers’ nine. The Vikings’ shot the ball efficiently going 50-percent from the field. 24 points off the bench gave them a boost as they went into half with a 14 point lead.
Coming out of the break the Vikings kept their foot on the pedal stretching the lead to 20 points early in the second half thanks to a three from Akoi. The Hardrockers’ didn’t go out quietly and worked their way back into the game thanks to a 15-8 run to make it a six point game with 1:18 remaining.
Graves was able to work the ball up the court and draw a foul which led to a scuffle resulting in a flagrant two foul once morest South Dakota Mines.
Akoi went to the stripe and knocked down both free throws stretching the lead to 82-74.
The Vikings retained possession due to the technical foul. On the inbound Jaden Graves was fouled once once more and got one point from the charity stripe.
The Hardrockers’ threw up one last desperation shot and it was rebounded by Fink for his eighth board of the night and ensured a 83-74 victory for the Vikings.
The Vikings shot 48-percent from the field while making 11 3-point baskets. In addition, a strong effort on the boards as the Vikings out-rebounded the Hardrockers 40-18.
