The SRF police series is a unique mix of action, humor and Valais German. “Tschugger” also shows its special charm behind the scenes: film professionals work with amateurs, provincial meets perfectionism and, despite the tight shooting schedule, there is a lot of laughter on the film set.
«Were the blue lights on? Was the blue light on?!” shouts David Constantin. The director, author and leading actor of “Tschugger” kept an eye on every detail when filming the third season. Constantin is something like the Swiss Army Knife on the film set.
During rehearsals with extras, he sometimes plays a car – and makes the film crew laugh. And no: the blue lights in the patrol car were not turned on. The stunt scene in the village center of Gampel has to be repeated.
Hollywood stuntman meets youth music director
“Tschugger” has managed to become a cult series with its very own aesthetic and fresh narrative style. The series is also unique in terms of production. It connects different worlds with each other.
Working together in Gampel: Hollywood stuntman Joe Dryden and Valais amateur actress Albertine Heinzen. Albertine was once David Constantin’s youth music director. Joe Dryden did the car and motorcycle stunts in the box office hit “John Wick”.

The stuntmen are the only professionals in front of the camera. What sets the amateur actors involved apart is that they are fully motivated. The film crew behind the scenes: fully professional. The whole shoot is planned according to general staff.
Filming demands a lot
It is shot in two locations at the same time and scenes from seasons 3 and 4 are mixed up. Mask, costume, chauffeur, lights – everyone knows exactly what they have to do, when and where. If something doesn’t work or someone misses their assignment, there are 50 people waiting. That immediately costs a lot of money.
We do something that makes people laugh. People might feel a little better following watching our series.
The passion on the film set is great. The required effort as well. For weeks and months you immerse yourself in the world of filming, away from family and friends. It’s a bit like being in a class camp. Most of the people here are young.
People with gray hair stand out. Like the gaffer Bruno Keller. He loves the variety in his job and the family atmosphere. But he also says: “To do this job for a long time, you need courage and a woman who supports you. Otherwise it wouldn’t have worked for me.”
“Completely disproportionate”
Months of effort for almost three hours of film. “Completely disproportionate,” says co-director Johannes Bachmann with a wink. But ultimately it’s still worth it. «Because we do something that makes people laugh. People might feel a little better following watching our series. We are like doctors. We lift the spirits of society a little.”
The positive response from the audience is one thing, the personal hardships are another. “Tschugger” mastermind David Constantin gave everything for the series. «I have achieved what I dreamed of professionally. Now I want to think regarding what else I plan to do privately? Because that was far too short in the time in which we made ‘Tschugger’.”
After season 4, Constantin has announced an indefinite break. Unfortunately for all “Tschugger” fans.
