Persistent Dengue Epidemic in Martinique: Latest Report and Statistics

2023-11-18 16:30:01

The latest epidemiological bulletin from Public Health France (SpF) concerning the Dengue epidemic in Martinique leaves no doubt regarding its persistence in Martinique. Compared to last week, the number of cases suggestive of patients having contracted the virus is increasing. However, the most serious cases are decreasing slightly.

This is good news for the hospital services in charge of the most seriously affected dengue patients. The number of visits to emergency departments is down by 18%, and the number of hospitalizations decreases by 19% between the beginning of November and the following week (from November 6 to 12).

But these indicators are not significant enough to emerge from the epidemic declared since the end of last July.

At the last report from SpF (Public Health France), 90 visits to the emergency room were recorded, including, 58 in pediatric emergencies (64%). These consultations resulted in 13 hospitalizations according to the services of the MFME (House of Women, Mothers and Children).

The estimated number of cases seen in city medicine for dengue syndrome is in 36% increase. THE home visits carried out by SOS-doctors for dengue syndrome, are also up 10%.

But this resurgence must be interpreted with caution, due to public holidays and All Saints’ Day holidays during which not all measurements were carried out under the usual conditions.

Over the past two weeks, clinically suggestive cases have been reported in 18 municipalities of Martinique. The municipalities reporting the highest incidence rates (> 40 per 10,000 inhabitants) are Anses-d’Arlet, Diamant, François and Schoelcher.

Since the start of the epidemic, it is estimated that 12,617 patients were consulted for dengue syndrome. 6 deaths among serious cases were recorded.
