The largest rocket ever reached space for the first time on Saturday. Yet the launch attempt is recorded as a failure for the American space company SpaceX. Shortly following reaching space, contact with the spacecraft was lost.
The Starship rocket was intended to make a ninety-minute journey through space. The connection was lost following ten minutes.
According to commentary on SpaceX’s livestream, the rocket exploded. The booster rocket that propelled the Starship rocket into space is also believed to have exploded over the Gulf of Mexico.
The first test, in April this year, also ended in an explosion shortly following takeoff. Regulator FAA subsequently temporarily banned a new test. SpaceX, a company owned by Elon Musk, was only allowed to test once more if it met safety and environmental requirements. The Starship rocket was therefore modified.
The second launch attempt was actually scheduled for Friday. It was then postponed by a day because a part had to be replaced at the last minute.
Starship rocket is bigger than the Dom Tower
Starship is a two-stage rocket. It consists of the Super Heavy rocket with the Starship spacecraft attached to it. The construction is 120 meters high in total. That is 8 meters higher than the Dom Tower in Utrecht.
With a version of Starship, SpaceX wants to fly to the moon and ultimately put people on Mars.
