Recalmin 2023: Key Findings from the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine Survey

2023-11-18 11:31:00
The Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI) has presented the report Recalmin 2023, which collects the results of a survey carried out in 104 hospital services of the specialty. Juana Carretero, president of the scientific society, has advanced the main statistics of this survey, which is still in the data collection phase. The presentation of the report took place on the third and final day of the 44th National Congress of the SEMI held in Valencia.

Recalmin Data 2023

According to the progress of the Recalmin 2023 report, Internal Medicine services incorporate 2,168 full-time internists, with an average of 21 internists per service and notable diversity. The estimated rate of internists in specialty services within the National Health System (SNS) is 8.4 per 100,000 inhabitants. This figure, in the opinion of SEMI, is far from the necessary average. “The ideal figure might be between 11 and 13 internists per 100,000 inhabitants; In fact, some hospitals already have this ratio,” said the president. As for the hospital beds, Internal Medicine services have an average of 17% assigned. And 9% of the specialty services have an assigned short stay unit. Likewise, 28% have a palliative care unit; 21% have a palliative care consultation and 93% have assigned beds.

Hospital discharges

Regarding hospital discharges, Internal Medicine services account for approximately 20% of the total, both the number of contacts and activity rates, with a slightly increasing trend. A significant fact is that the rate of internists per inhabitant tends to be higher the smaller the size of the center, as well as the number of discharges per internist per year. Furthermore, according to Recalmin 2023, 43% of Internal Medicine services have an assigned medical day hospital. 26% have been assigned the home hospitalization and 59% have a care program for complex chronic patients. Juana Carretero has also highlighted “the scarce research activity of Internal Medicine services in centers that have less than 200 beds.”

Recalmin 2023 debate

The moderators of the ‘Recalmin: Internal Medicine services of the 21st century’ table have been Manuel Méndez Bailón, from the Internal Medicine Service of the San Carlos Clinical University Hospital in Madrid, y Montserrat Chimeno Viñas, from the Internal Medicine Service of the Zamora Care Complex.

Apart from President Juana Carretero, she has also participated in the colloquium Javier Elola Somoza, from the Institute for the Improvement of Health Care Foundation (IMAS), entity in charge of collecting and processing data. Likewise, he has participated in the debate María Teresa Herranz Martín, from the Internal Medicine Service of the Morales Meseguer University Hospital in Murcia.

The data collection period is still open

The data offered by SEMI at its National Congress in Valencia has been a preview of the Recalmin 2023 study, since the data collection phase is still open. So far, 104 hospital services have responded to the survey, although SEMI hopes that more centers will join. In this sense, María Teresa Herranz has spoken regarding the benefits of knowing the data of the specialty in order to improve patient care. “I would like to have a comparative analysis both between hospitals of the same category and between centers in other locations.” In this sense, Javier Elola has pointed out that comparative information between autonomous communities might be offered in future reports.
