The Krems Caricature Museum is dedicating a large exhibition to the Austrian cartoonist Wolfgang Ammer on the occasion of his 70th birthday, which opened on Saturday morning. 140 works from the last 30 years can be seen. The title of the show – “Dialogue with the World” – describes the artist’s “global foresight,” said Gottfried Gusenbauer, artistic director of the museum.
Hermann Dikowitsch, head of the cultural department of the Lower Austrian state government office, also paid tribute to Ammer’s work. He referred, among other things, to the rich state collections from which – in addition to private loans – the exhibition was put together by the curator duo Gusenbauer and Anna Steinmair. When you tour the exhibition you will meet many familiar faces: from Biden to Putin, from Kurz to Babler, from Johnson to Xi Jinping.
Born in Upper Austria, Ammer traveled a lot in his younger years. From the 1990s onwards, his drawings were published by numerous international media, including “Welt”, “New York Times”, “Le Monde”, “FAZ” and “Spiegel”. For over 40 years, Ammer commented on domestic political events for the Wiener Zeitung, which closed at the end of June 2023 as the oldest print medium in the world.
Cartoonists are seismographs of democracy, said Ammer at the opening. The inspiration and way of working are characterized by the ability to change perspectives: “I always try to have a cross-opinion or the opposite opinion. That is absolutely important and decisive and for me the foundation of the caricature. I love the discussion,” said Ammer and added: “A good one Caricature always represents a tragicomedy. There is humor involved, and there is tragedy behind it. For me, poetry is also important.”
