Fever in young children can often worry parents. But what are the most common mistakes parents make during treatment and how can they be avoided? Nikki Jurcutz, former nurse and founder of the educational platform Tiny Hearts Education, gives valuable advice and explains the dangers that can arise from incorrect treatment.
Fever is a common phenomenon in young children and can often cause concern for parents. Nikki Jurcutz, former nurse and founder of Tiny Hearts Education, points out two common mistakes parents make when treating fevers.
“Remember, fever is the body’s natural response to infection. If your child looks and feels well, there is no need to treat the fever as long as it doesn’t go above 100 degrees,” explains Jurcutz.
She also strongly warns once morest giving aspirin to children with flu or chickenpox. Taking this medication in these circumstances may lead to the development of Reye’s syndrome, a serious condition that can be potentially fatal or cause serious brain damage.
Bath in cold water?
Another mistake parents often make is trying to bring down the fever by bathing in cold water or taking a cold shower. “It is important not to cool the child down too quickly. “Putting a baby or child under a cold shower is unsettling and can lead to hypothermia, where the body temperature drops below 35 degrees Celsius,” warns Jurcutz.
The expert emphasizes that it is crucial to treat the symptoms and not the number on the thermometer. She also points out that it is important to make sure the child stays hydrated.
“It is recommended to resort to medication such as paracetamol or ibuprofen if the child’s body temperature is above 38.5 degrees. However, it is important to seek expert advice from a pediatrician before use,” she advises.
