How Covid Gave Manga an Unexpected Second Wind: The Rise of Manga Sales and Accessibility Explained

Today manga represents 50% of comic book sales. And it is the covid crisis and the confinement of the population which significantly accelerated sales. A new generation is discovering manga on screen through platforms, at home. Once “deconfined”, many young people obtain manga in paper version in bookstores. “They buy tons of manga” specifies the founder of Kana.

Covid almost saved the manga, it gave the manga an unexpected second wind.

Adults have some difficulty adapting to the reading direction (in these Japanese comics, we start with the right page and move on to the left), which delights children. “As soon as there is something that adults don’t understand, it’s guaranteed success!” said Yves Schlirf, amused.

Manga may seem inaccessible or reserved for those in the know. Faced with the imposing offer of production available in bookstores, “people ask themselves ‘where to start?‘” explains Olivier Fallaix. “Don’t hesitate to ask for advice. The manga is very intuitive, it’s so well cut, you just have to let yourself be carried away“.
