With information from the cars in real time, drivers and their teams have resources for insights that are used in competition strategy and operational efficiency

São Paulo, November 17, 2023 – Having been held in Brazilian territory for 15 years, the Porsche Cup has become a success in motorsport, taking thousands of people to FIA standard racetracks in Brazil to cheer on their favorite drivers. Since then, competition has been evolving and innovating in the sector and, with technology becoming a competitive element in different markets, it might not be any different in an environment where speed is a crucial factor for performance. In its new strategy, the Porsche Cup begins analyzing real-time data telemetry in the cloud and offering insights from information collected from vehicles as they race. The data is used to improve car performance, decision-making during races and operational efficiency, especially for maintenance and monitoring.

The initiative, in collaboration with BlueShift, a consultancy specializing in Big Data & Analytics, Generative AI, IoT and RPA services and solutions; and Microsoft, allows the collection of real-time information from vehicles, which will be transmitted to the Microsoft Azure cloud and stored in a data lake. Using data insights, drivers and their teams will be able to make quick and accurate decisions during races, improving car performance and increasing the chances of victory. Furthermore, it will be possible to retrieve information regarding drivers’ previous laps, allowing for a more in-depth analysis that will serve as a basis for strategies during the current race and for the next stages of the competition.

This technology has already been successfully tested in the July stage, in Interlagos, and, in September, in Argentina. In stage 9 of the circuit, which takes place on November 18th, the technology will already be in use. The initiative, in the future, will also bring benefits to the public, who will be able to interact with the race organizers and receive real-time information regarding what is happening on the track and with the drivers.

An example of the impact of this adoption is the rapid collection and analysis of data such as tire pressure. This information might mean, for example, that the tire has gone flat. however, there are other factors that must be taken into account for this diagnosis and, with real-time data, standard deviations generate alerts for the Porsche Cup engineering team, which can assess the real situation and inform the driver whether he should ignore, slow down, stop and make a repair or you can continue running. This can be done without the technical professional having to resort to consulting screens on the car’s dashboard.

“In addition to performance, driver safety is our priority. This evolution, through technology, allows us to provide the technical team with the necessary resources (and in real time) so that they can make the appropriate decisions. This supports us in terms of safety, efficiency and the development of strategies during the circuit”, says Dener Pires, CEO of Porsche Cup in Brazil.

The infrastructure, provided as a service, will allow the Porsche Cup internal team to maintain control over data, updating providers, security patches and relying on cloud-native resources for the responsible and secure handling of information, valuing privacy and compliance. operation.

Previously, data was collected through cables that were connected to cars to extract information. This process might take up to 30 minutes and the car needed to stop in the pit for the process to be completed. With the adoption of the cloud, data will be available in real time, without the need for an engineer to travel to the location. With this, the technical team can also anticipate diagnoses and organize any maintenance queues, including before the car returns to the pit, for example, for cars stopped on the track.

For Christiano Faig, vice president of Technology and Solutions at Microsoft Brazil, the Porsche Cup is improving the experience of the entire chain involved in motorsport. “By adopting what we call data-driven, the competition as a whole benefits. From the pilots, engineers and operations teams, to the public itself, who can count on some of this information while watching the event. Our solution was designed together with the client to meet the specificities of a sport like this, where every second is decisive”, he adds.

All telemetry data is collected in real time through a device (IoT), developed by IturanMOB, the global mobility arm of Ituran (Nasdaq – ITRN), a global vehicle monitoring autotech. “Our IOTs are connected to the car’s logical network by Induction. With this, we do not interfere with the originality of PorscheCUP cars, as well as the more than 2000 IOTs already in use in Brazil for the purpose of mobility and vehicle sharing” Comments Paulo Henrique Andrade, CEO and Founder of IturaMOB

“The Porsche Cup has reached a new level by integrating real-time telemetry technology in the cloud that enables instant diagnostics for the competition. In partnership with Microsoft, BlueShift is proud to be part of this initiative that revolutionizes car performance, offering crucial insights to drivers and teams. Instant data collection, securely transmitted to Azure, not only improves operational efficiency but also increases pilot safety. Fast, accurate decisions can now be made during races, highlighting Porsche Cup’s commitment to innovation and an improved experience for teams and spectators. The adoption of this technology not only accelerates data analysis, but also represents a milestone in the evolution of motorsport in Brazil” says Alan Camillo, CTO at BlueShift.

The technology behind the competition

Porsche is one of the companies using the recently announced Microsoft Fabric, which is currently in preview at the moment. The tool is a complete analytics solution for enterprises that ranges from data movement to data science, real-time analytics and business intelligence. It combines Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Data Explorer, and Power BI into a single unified cloud experience. The basis of data lakehouse It’s cost-effective and optimized for workload performance and business intelligence, machine learning, and AI at any scale. Additionally, the solution is a foundation for migrating and modernizing existing analytics solutions, whether on data appliances or in data warehouses traditional.

In the future, Porsche Cup plans to use the system actively, with 5G operation, generating even faster traffic to the cloud and allowing them to intervene in some car commands, such as activating the car’s security mode.
