Belgium should not run out of electricity this winter. It is only in “very extreme situations” that it risks being confronted with a security of supply problem. This is what a report from the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) reveals.
According to ENTSO-E, for the winter of 2023-2024, the availability of production facilities in Belgium will be high and the demand for electricity will remain in line with that of previous years. Planned maintenance of power plants can also be postponed if necessary, it is emphasized in the report.
“Under normal conditions, Belgium can continue to export electricity. In “severe” circumstances – high demand for electricity and little renewable energy available – it is structurally necessary to import electricity to cover shortages”, we can also read in the conclusion of the report.
And it is only in “very extreme situations” that there is a risk of shortage. The European network considers this possibility to be “low”.
High voltage operator Elia confirms that no security issues in terms of supply are anticipated. “We are in a better position than last year. Gas stocks in Europe are well filled everywhere, and the French nuclear fleet is also in a better position.”
When we refer to “very extreme situations” that might lead to risks for supply, we are talking regarding “extreme cold waves” or “unexpected failures of large units here or in France”, continues Elia, adding that “vigilance is always required”.
