How do I know if I am menopausal?

Menopause is the time when ovulation stops and periods disappear. That’s the basic topo. But menopause also means hot flashes, fatigue, irritability, sleep problems, etc.

Menopause is everyone’s business

In France, each year 500,000 new women become menopausal. Menopause usually occurs between 45 and 55 years old and generally around 50 years old. And with the increase in life expectancy, menopause now represents more than a third of a woman’s life … However, this is far from being a period that women go through peacefully. And for good reason: to the hormonal upheaval and other symptoms is added the taboo which makes communication on the subject difficult to manage with those around you (spouse, children, parents, family). Result ? Many women find themselves helpless when they need support the most.

Recognizing menopause using the BISES method

56% of women believe they do not have enough information regarding menopause. And only 40% of women say they are followed by a doctor1,2. And it must be recognized: a bit like pre-menstrual syndrome, the symptoms are so numerous and diverse that it is sometimes difficult to link them (or not) to a hormonal origin. It is in the face of this worrying observation that the French Menopause Society and Vichy Laboratories decided to join forces, convinced that menopause is better experienced when we talk regarding it. Together, they implemented a method to identify symptoms and, in fact, toimprove menopause care : the acronym BISES.

  • B. for Hot Flashes
  • I. for Interruption of periods
  • S. for Mood swings
  • E. for Weight change
  • S. for Dry skin

Recognizing yourself in these 5 symptoms will then allow each woman to be able to identify symptoms of menopause and request support from a health professional in order to be better supported in this key stage. And to encourage the propagation of the acronym BISES but also to spread information, Vichy published a ‘Commitment forum for better care of Menopause and freedom of speech3to sign line.

Why it is essential to identify menopause to preserve your health

Although it is not a disease, estrogen deficiency which characterizes the cessation of ovarian activity at menopause can, in women most at risk, promote health concerns such as:

  • increased cardiovascular risk because the natural protection by hormones disappears at menopause,
  • increased risk of osteoporosis due to a reduction in the body’s ability to produce bone tissue,
  • a genitourinary syndrome causing burning sensations, irritation, pain, sexual problems and urinary problems,
  • a risk of being overweight,

Medical monitoring allows them to be detected quickly and taken care of.
