Understanding the Impact of Circadian Rhythms on Energy Metabolism and Obesity

Obese people have higher insulin hormone levels during the day… Normal weight people burn more calories (energy) during the day than obese people, while obese people burn more calories at night than normal weight people. Research results have shown that it burns a lot.

A research team from the University of Oregon Health Sciences (OHSU) found this result following having a total of 30 people stay in a specially designed research laboratory for 6 days. Participants slept, ate, and exercised according to a strict pre-established circadian rhythm study plan.

Studies have also shown that obese people have higher levels of the hormone insulin during the day. This is a sign that your body is working harder to use glucose, a calorie-rich sugar.

Assistant Professor Andrew McHill (Nursing, Occupational Health Sciences Institute, University of Oregon), first author of the study, said, “I was surprised to learn that the timing of our body burning calories is significantly different between obese and non-obese people.” “But the reason is not yet clear. Burning fewer calories during the day may be a cause or a consequence of obesity,” he said. This study is not an experimental study to prove a causal relationship, but an observational study to examine the relationship.

According to the research team, daily schedule and timing of sleep, meals, and exercise can also affect health by complementing or running counter to the body’s natural daily rhythm. People experience many changes caused by the body’s internal clock over a 24-hour period. Changes typically occur at certain times of the day to best meet the body’s needs.

At the end of their sleep period, the research team had the participants wake up, eat a meal, and participate in various tests for the remainder of the day. The research team had them exercise while wearing masks connected to an indirect calorie meter and then measured carbon dioxide to estimate energy use. Additionally, blood samples were collected from those who received the same meal every day and their glucose levels were measured.

The research team plans to investigate the eating habits and hunger of normal weight and obese people in the future. This is a follow-up study to previous research (2013) that showed that the circadian clock increases food cravings at night. Obesity is when the body mass index (BMI) is over 30. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

The results of this study (Obesity alters the circadian profiles of energy metabolism and glucose regulation in humans) were published in the journal Obesity.
