The Pope gave a message to the participants of the conference on Thursday morning. Emphasizing that God always calls a person for the good of all, the Pope presented examples of saints from the history of the Church in his sermon.
The Pope said that martyrdom is a powerful example of holiness and that there has never been a period in the history of the Church without martyrs. The Pope clarified by pointing out the life of Asia Bibi that there are those who continue to live the Christian life as a blood witness in our era.
Asia Bibi is on her way to Canada following being freed following being sentenced to death for blasphemy in Pakistan for nine years. Referring to her nine years of Christian witness, the Pope added that there are many who like her give witness to faith and life.
Speaking regarding the ability of holiness to unite, the Pope explained that holiness is first accomplished in love and that holiness is not a personal event but a social one as it unites us with others. God calls a person with the good of everyone in mind. The Pope mentioned that Abraham, Moses, Peter and Paul are examples. The only fair response to Jesus’ love is to immediately share it with others, the Pope said.
The Pope also spoke regarding the sanctification that takes place in the family. The Pope said that there are many examples of this holiness in the Church, which was evidenced in the Holy Family of Nazareth. Emphasizing that the sanctity of a married couple doubles the sanctity of each of them, the Pope mentioned the story of martyrs Joseph and Victoria Ulma and their children who tried to save Jews from the Nazis in Poland. The Pope added that holiness is a community journey and not something to be done alone.
