Apple’s vice president of environmental, political and social initiatives, Lisa Jackson, was recognized on the prestigious list TIME100 Climate from the magazine TIME this year. The selection honors the most influential climate leaders in the business world.

In an interview, Jackson highlighted how companies are essential to driving climate action, explaining how crucial it is to reduce harmful gas emissions at all stages of production to make real progress.

She highlighted that Apple committed (and has fulfilled) the goal of making each product carbon neutral by 2030, focusing on reducing emissions from the main areas: electricity, materials and transportation.

I visited a project in Kenya this year that created women-led grass seed banks and trained hundreds of local Maasai community members in up-to-date rangeland management techniques to get more value from the land. Business investment in carbon removal helps make this possible.

Jackson emphasized the importance of paying more attention and investing more in climate-related technologies, especially in areas where current solutions fail to reduce the emissions that inevitably occur.

She mentioned that transportation is an important area that lacks technologies to eliminate carbon emissions from business travel, commuting and transportation of goods. She emphasized the urgency of investing more in innovation to overcome these obstacles.

There are emissions that simply cannot be avoided with the solutions available today. […] The potential for more sustainable aviation fuels is present and there are promising new technologies aimed at decarbonizing shipping — accelerated studies and investment can help the industry seize this opportunity.

Finally, when talking regarding advances in legislation, Jackson praised the new climate legislation in California, which requires companies to transparently detail their greenhouse gas emissions across all operations. She highlighted that Apple has been following this practice for ten years.

Transparent climate disclosure is a powerful tool to help companies understand their impact and drive progress in the fight once morest climate change. I see tremendous potential for other states and national governments to follow California’s lead and adopt similar, harmonized standards.

A few weeks ago, the magazine TIME highlighted three Apple products among the 200 best inventions of 2023; the Apple Vision Pro, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and the Beats Studio Buds+, which were mentioned for their audio improvements and their transparent version.

On a related note, Brazil’s environment minister, Marina Silva, also appeared on the list.
