Surreal Scenes in Brussels: Cyclists and Traffic Chaos on Avenue de Tervueren

The scene is surreal to say the least. It takes place in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, avenue de Tervueren, in the direction of Montgomery from Mérode. A large police sign was placed with the inscription: “Cyclists, please respect the Highway Code”.

Cyclists must therefore move onto the motorists’ lane and leave what, theoretically, is a bus-taxi-bike lane, as the sign clearly indicates. Except that this strip is in reality primarily used for (illegal) parking of cars and trucks, but also of buses.

“This kind of thing discourages cycling”

“Oh, I’m tracing my route, I didn’t even notice,” Pascal tells us on his two-wheeler. For Alexandre, another cyclist, the feeling is more bitter. “The cyclist is the weak user. This kind of thing discourages cycling.”

This sign, installed by the Montgomery police zone, supports the no cyclists sign towards Mérode. The cycle path on this section of Avenue de Tervueren is in fact unidirectional, but many cyclists still take it in the wrong direction. A practice accentuated due to the works on the other side of the avenue, which force cyclists heading towards Mérode to make an additional detour.

When the temporary becomes permanent: the “cycle paths of discord” avenue de Tervueren repainted once more pending redevelopment

When contacted, the Brussels Mobility administration told us that it was not the initiator of this signage, and that it disapproves. Contacts are made with the police area.
