WHEELING — The West Virginia Storytelling Guild and Oglebay Institute are presenting “Tellabration,” a free storytelling concert at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at OI’s Towngate Theatre at 2118 Market St., Wheeling.
The concert is sponsored by Main Street Bank. Five members of the West Virginia Storytelling Guild will present a variety of family-friendly stories for audience members of all ages.
Those slated to perform are: W.I. “Bill” Hairston, Linda Durrett, Mikalena Zuckett, Mary Jo Sonntag and Judi Tarowsky.
“‘Tellabration’ is an international event typically held the third Saturday in November,” said Tarowsky, Guild president. “Ideally, the event is offered free to the public and the performers donate their talents as a way to thank the community for their support of storytelling.
“The performers won’t be reading their stories,” Tarowsky said. “Storytelling is done without notes and without books. The audience and the storytellers share the magic of the story, whether it is a personal story, tall tale or folktale. Storytelling is the way cultures throughout the centuries have shared their knowledge and wisdom. And stories ‘travel,’ so different cultures may have the same story, but it is told within the traditions of that culture.”
