Chinese government presents 1.2 Tb/s connection, the ‘fastest internet in the world’

This week, the Chinese government launched a connection that it claims is the fastest internet in the world, capable of transmitting data at 1.2 terabits per second, a speed ten times faster than the most advanced networks today. It is a milestone that surpassed global forecasts, which estimated that ultra-high-speed services above 1 Tb/s would only be available from 2025.

The initiative consists of an extensive fiber optic network of approximately 3,000 kilometers, connecting Beijing to the north, Guangzhou to the south and passing through Wuhan in the center of the country. Officially launched by China, the connection is the result of a collaboration between Tsinghua University, China Mobile, Cernet Corporation and Huawei Technologies, integrating the China Future Internet Technology Infrastructure (FITI).

Activated in July, the network underwent tests that confirmed its exceptional speed, surpassing conventional networks that operate at 100 Gb/s, even following a recent upgrade in the United States to 400 Gb/s.

The new network offers remarkable optimization for online streaming and downloads, allowing a user to download 150 4K movies in just one second, according to Wang Lei, vice president of Huawei. However, the initial implementation will focus on serving companies, educational and research institutions, as well as government bodies that require faster data transfers.

Availability for residential consumers may be limited, considering the need for specific ultra-fast routers developed for the project. Sectors such as healthcare, national security and connected electric vehicles will also benefit from the technology.
