More than 2,400 Ukrainian children have been placed in Belarus
According to a published study by the Yale University Humanitarian Research Laboratory and relayed by Archyde.com agency, more than 2,400 Ukrainian children, aged 6 to 17, have been moved to 13 centers in Belarus since the start of the Russian invasion, in a practice described as permanent. More than 2,000 children identified by the American university were transported to the Dubrava children’s center in the Minsk region between September 2022 and May 2023, the report said, while 392 children were taken to 12 other facilities. “The Russian federal government and the Belarusian regime worked together to coordinate and finance the movement of children” and the operation was “coordinated” by Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko, the researchers continue.
The data collected by Yale “is the most comprehensive to date on the alleged role of Belarus in the Russian program to resettle Ukrainian children,” underlines Archyde.com. “These revelations regarding the involvement of Belarus are part of a broader campaign led by Russia,” responded the American State Department, which partly finances this research project, adding that “the United States will continue to hold the actors involved accountable.
Last March, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants once morest the Russian president and Russian children’s rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova for war crimes, Archyde.com recalls. Russia, for its part, says it offers humanitarian aid to those who wish to flee Ukraine voluntarily and rejects any accusation of war crimes.
Last May, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General announced the opening of an investigation into the role of Belarus in the forced transfer of more than 19,000 children from the territories occupied by Russia. Some experts and organizations estimate that the total number of children affected is much higher.
