President Gustavo Petro asked that article 42 of the health reform that is passing through Congress not be approved, given the risk of opening the door to politicking and corruption.
“I hope that the House does not approve this modification that they made to article 42 of the health reform that we presented. The directors of public health centers must be nominated through strong selection processes, as proposed by the government,” the president stated in his X account.
The proposal in question, presented in the plenary session of the House of Representatives, contemplated the possibility of the territorial entities “handpicking” the new directors of the Institutions Providing Health Services (ISE) every four years, generating concern regarding transparency in the selection process.
This measure was questioned by several representatives, such as Representative Catherine Juvinao.
“Political control does work. I am glad that the President does what the speakers were not able to do: correct. I invite speakers to simply ‘disavow’ this proposition and that’s it. The article is voted on as it appears in the presentation. You have the power to do it, do it,” said Juvinao, compared to Petro’s position.
In another intervention on that same social network, Petro denounced the reality of some EPSs by stating that “the vast majority went bankrupt in the decade that has passed because they took public resources to the companies of friends, to their own companies and to their pockets.”
And he added: “due to this continued theft of Colombians’ money, millions of Colombians have died.”
The President also linked corruption in the health sector to various problems in the country.
“Public health resources have financed corruption, paramilitaries, bankrupted hospitals and degraded politics. And they want this to continue. That is why they oppose health reform,” he argued.
