Today, a large part of the population enjoys some of the streaming services, be it video, music or even games. In recent years, this way of consuming audiovisual content has revolutionized the entertainment market, once and for all entering society’s daily lives.

These services were responsible for revolutionizing the way people consume content today.

In fact, the popularization of these services has increased consumer interest in purchasing a discounted smart television, which allows you to use your own applications for this purpose. Most people probably think of Netflix or Spotify when they talk regarding streaming, but recent years have seen the emergence of several other platforms, something that has affected sectors such as cinema, television and the music industry.

After all, how did we get to this point? Many people don’t know, but Netflix didn’t appear just over 10 years ago. In fact, it was created in the late 90s, as a service that offered consumers the purchase and rental of DVDs by mail. In other words, the interested party accessed the company’s website, chose the films they would like to watch and that was it: the physical media was delivered to their home, to be collected following the agreed time.

The idea of ​​streaming services would only happen years later, with the advancement of TV and cell phone technology and the popularization of the Internet. In this text, you will find out how the evolution of streaming services happened.

Origin and arrival in Brazil

Still in 2006, the first video streaming services appeared in the USA. However, only since the 2010s have these platforms truly improved and redefined the way the public consumes content. This was possible thanks to cheaper broadband Internet, which offered faster speeds, allowing high-quality real-time transmission to the viewer. In parallel to this, there was the evolution and popularization of devices capable of taking advantage of these services, such as smartphones and televisions.

Still in 2011, Netflix arrived in Brazil with monthly plans for 15 reais and offering a large catalog of films and series. The idea of ​​being able to watch whatever you want in the comfort of your home for a cheaper price than a cable TV package aroused the interest of many people. However, Netflix faced criticism for only offering old series and films, in addition to having little turnover.

Original productions on streaming services

The turning point came in 2013. Still in 2011, the streaming service Hulu, from the United States, began investing in the production of original content, both in series and films. The idea was well received by the public and led Netflix to do the same, debuting one of its most successful series to date this year: House of Cards. As it was exclusive to the service, the only way for interested parties to watch the work was by subscribing to the streaming service.

The good reception caused Netflix to invest even more in its own content. In 2014, the documentary The Square was the first streaming work to compete for the Oscar for the first time. In the following years, Netflix films and series began to compete and win important awards in the areas of cinema and television.

New competitors in streaming services

With the model established, other streaming services were soon created or arrived in Brazil. In the middle of the last decade, TVs with 4K resolution were already produced, something that, combined with the increase in Internet speed, allowed consumers to have access to content with UHD resolution.

In 2016, it was Amazon Prime Video’s turn to arrive in Brazil. This service offered a cheaper monthly fee and a new feature: the possibility of downloading films and series to watch offline. In addition to Prime Vídeo, the first national streaming service emerged, Globoplay, from Grupo Globo, which brought together productions from the broadcaster itself.

In the following years, the number of options and in-house production also increased with the debut of new services. Disney+, Apple TV+, HBO Max, Telecine Play, Crunchyroll and MUBI were some of the new members that emerged, which made the market more segmented, but also greatly increased the options for consumers, so that each niche might be covered.
