Health in the digital age

The world of healthcare is increasingly moving into the digital age. Mobile applications, medical data transfer, artificial intelligence tools, etc. digital health is now part of the healthcare landscape. In France, since 2019, the Ministry of Health has also implemented a national digital health strategy and a digital health agency was created to bring together advances in this field in France.

The field of digital health is booming and many players are contributing to it. THE European MedFIT exhibition which was held in October 2023 in Strasbourg is an example. For this 2023 edition, more than 650 participants from more than 30 countries took part to present and discuss innovations in the fields of MedTech, diagnostics and digital health. The main themes covered were:

  • The acceleration of digital health;
  • Cybersecurity, to secure medical data;
  • Regulations on digital devices;
  • Economic models to develop in digital health;
  • Access to the European market for digital health innovations.

Innovations in digital health highlighted

The MedFIT show is also an opportunity to connect European and international digital health players to advance their innovations and spark new collaborations. Between the two face-to-face days and the online day, 4,000 connections were initiated thanks to the show’s digital platform. Obviously, the objective of such an event is also to shine a spotlight on the latest innovations in digital healththanks to the award ceremony.

The most promising innovation was this year the SPIFF project, developed by the University of Fribourg. The project consists of developing an innovative catheter capable of reducing episodes of arrhythmia that can occur following an organ transplant. Another notable innovation, the Multisense connected mini-patch, developed by the company RDS. This mini-patch, equipped with 5 sensors, makes it possible to monitor the measurement of around ten cardiorespiratory parameters in real time. It was developed with the aim of allowing faster discharge from hospital for operated patients, while guaranteeing optimal follow-up at home.

Europe, a new key player in digital health

Another award-winning innovation during this edition of the MedFIT show, the artificial intelligence tool developed by the start-up Checkeye. Thanks to this award, the company will be supported in evaluating the safety of their tool. Using photographic images of the back of the eye, this cloud-hosted artificial intelligence tool from Checkeye can detect diabetic retinopathy, one of the multiple complications of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This innovation allows rapid and early diagnosis, initiation of treatment as early as possible and therefore better preservation of patients’ vision.

Digital health is evolving very quickly across the world and Europe is becoming an increasingly important player in this area, as evidenced by the success of the MedFIT exhibition. The next edition of the Medfit Show will take place on December 3 and 4, 2024 in Lille. The appointment is made!
