The president of Vooruit, Conner Rousseau, will have to go to the Dossin Barracks following his comments on the Roma community at the beginning of September, he said on Wednesday.

Drunk, the Flemish socialist attacked police officers leaving a café in Saint-Nicolas and incited them to use their batons once morest the Roma in the town. Reported in the press, this incident caused a heated controversy and pushed Mr. Rousseau to apologize during a press conference. A complaint was filed by representatives of the Roma community. The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office has started a mediation procedure, which is accompanied by measures of which it has not given details.

The explanations came from the person concerned who will have to go to the Dossin Barracks in Mechelen, Shoah Memorial in Belgium, and follow sessions with a therapist on the impact of words and language. A justice assistant will ensure the correct application of the measures for one year. “I recognize my fault and I will implement the measures scrupulously“, assured Mr. Rousseau who said he had already started a dialogue with the Roma community.

This is not the first time that a Belgian political representative has had to go to the Dossin Barracks. The former member of Vlaams Belang, founder of the Flemish identity movement Schild & Vrienden, had already had this measure imposed in 2019.
