Netflix Cup: Formula 1 Pilots and Golf Pros Compete in Las Vegas

Netflix came up with something special for Formula 1 in Las Vegas: Grand Prix pilots alongside golf professionals in a small tournament at the Casino-Hotel Wynn, so to speak “Drive to Survive” once morest “Full Swing”, both Sports documentaries from Netflix. Carlos Sainz with Justin Thomas once morest Lando Norris and Rickie Fowler as well as Alex Albon and Max Homa once morest Pierre Gasly and Tony Finau. The whole thing was streamed by Netflix – the first sporting event ever.

After a not-too-serious eight-hole round (e.g. tee shots from all four teams at the same time and then a sprint to see who would hole out first), Sainz and the American Thomas, also 29, had the better end for themselves proudly lifted the Netflix Cup – and the Ferrari driver promptly dropped the trophy, which broke into four pieces.

Thomas, without batting an eyelid: “Carlos, I guess you have to leave this stage now.” Sainz stood there like a watered poodle, and the jacket with the checkered flag pattern was no longer of any use.

This year’s Singapore GP winner Sainz – for the first time in his life in the glittering city – said in the paddock of the Las Vegas Strip Circuit: “The Netflix Cup was fun, a great thing for me as a golf addict. It was also nice that so many fans came. It was quite embarrassing to break the trophy. But I enjoyed the jacket more than the trophy anyway.”

«As far as the track is concerned, I did a lot of laps in the simulator. And I’ll watch how the safety car laps here. You always learn something there. I’m calculating a few things. We got to Singapore quickly, so we should get here quickly too.”

“I find the combination of turns 1 to 3 interesting, and in turns 6/7 it is tricky to find the right braking point. Apart from that you have to have a lot of confidence on the brakes following the long straight. And you must not be afraid to come close to the walls.”
