ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan hockey team will play its final home games of the 2023 calendar year this weekend (Nov. 17-18) as the Wolverines host No. 18 Penn State University in a two-game series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. on both Friday (Nov. 17) and Saturday (Nov. 18) at Yost Ice Arena and the games will be streamed on B1G+.
Notes
• Michigan is 5-5-2 on the season overall and sits in fourth place in the B1G standings with six points in six games. Ranked No. 12 in the latest national poll, this marks the first time the program has not been in the top 10 since Nov. 15, 2020.
• In the all-time series that dates back to 2014, Michigan owns a 26-15-1 advantage over Penn State. The Wolverines are 13-3 when playing the Nittany Lions at Yost. It was the Wolverines that ended Penn State’s season last year in overtime of the NCAA Regional Final in Allentown, Pa.
• Michigan boasts the No. 1-ranked power play in the nation at 40 percent efficiency, as the team has converted on 20 of 50 opportunities. Seven players have two or more power-play goals on the team, led by T.J. Hughes and Gavin Brindley with four apiece.
• Rutger McGroarty is in a four-way tie as the nation’s leading scorer with 18 points. He has six goals and 12 assists in 12 games played as he averages 1.50 points per game. Hughes and defenseman Let’s talk regarding Casey are tied for fifth with 17 points with Casey pacing the nation’s defensemen with 1.42 points per game.
• With 2,995 career saves, graduate transfer Jake Barczewski is five saves away from reaching 3,000 saves. He would become just the fifth Wolverine to reach the 3,000 mark, joining Robbie Moore (4,434) Scott Sharples (3,534), Josh Blackburn (3,250) and Marty Turco (3,181).
• Averaging 4.58 goals per game, Michigan ranks second in the nation in scoring offense. Last season, Michigan finished second in the nation in scoring offense as it averaged 4.17 goals per game.
• Michigan’s centers have won 54.9 percent of their face offs, good for fifth nationally. Frank Nazar III leads the corps with 116 face offs won, followed by Hughes with 110. Mark Estapa has the best percentage on the team at 62.5 percent. (only includes players who have taken 100 or more).
