Urgent Need for New National Stroke Plan: Insights from French Neurovascular Society President

LILLE, November 15, 2023 (APMnews) – Faced with the “scale” of the demographics of strokes which are expected with the aging of the population, “there would be plenty of reason to make a new plan”, said the president of the French Neurovascular Society (SFNV), Professor Sonia Alamowitch of Saint-Antoine hospital in Paris (AP-HP), Wednesday in Lille.

The neurologist spoke as an introduction to the national day of ARS referents and facilitators (regional health agencies) of stroke sectors, which the SFNV has hosted for 11 years as part of its annual congress organized for the first time in the provinces, in Lille .

“We have the impression that stroke, the leading cause of acquired disability, is no longer a confidential illness both for the general public and the authorities and this is good news. But almost 10 years from the end of the stroke plan, there would be plenty of room for a new one given the demographic scale of strokes that is coming, while we have new treatments”, notably thrombectomy, she estimated.

This national stroke plan took place over 2010-2014 and allowed in particular the establishment of neurovascular units (NVUs).

But the context is different today, with 140,000 strokes per year. However, according to a European report, the number of strokes in Europe is expected to increase between 2015 and 2035 by 34%, particularly with the aging of the population.

“The regulatory context is also evolving, with the reform of critical care, the problem of new centers for thrombectomy and the suffering of medium-sized or even larger UNVs, in a health system in crisis due to demographics doctors and nurses,” emphasized Professor Alamowitch.

The SFNV warned in 2021 regarding the situation of the UNVs, particularly impacted by the Covid-19 crisis (see dispatch from 11/19/2021 at 2:41 p.m.) and on the endangerment of the territorial network (see dispatch from 01/15/2021 at 5:00 p.m.), we recall.

“Now is the time to move up a gear,” urged Professor Alamowitch.
