After two years of health crisis which had a very strong impact on hospitals, the macroeconomic context added its share of difficulties in 2022, with record inflation, prices of energy, food and raw materials breaking through the ceilings, rising interest rates and without forgetting the indexation of salaries… Result: the Belgian hospital sector is on the brink of the abyss, reveals the 29th MAHA analysis (Model for Automatic Hospital Analyses) published Wednesday by the Belfius bank. For the first time, the ordinary operating profit of general hospitals is in the red with a loss on their key activities in 2022 of 181 million euros. Although a slight improvement is expected in 2023 (a certain number of financings being indexed with a lag), the result will nevertheless remain negative, according to Belfius projections.
