The US state of New Hampshire announced Wednesday that the east coast state’s presidential primaries will take place on January 23, defying President Joe Biden’s preferred voting schedule.

This announcement will have little impact on the race for the White House, since Joe Biden had already withdrawn from the New Hampshire vote in anticipation of this decision, knowing that no serious threat calls into question his position presumptive Democratic candidate for the 2024 presidential election.

Every four years, the spotlight is on Iowa and New Hampshire, two rural states with predominantly white populations, which kick off several months of primaries ahead of the presidential election.

South Carolina, preferred by Biden

Last year, the Democratic National Committee approved Joe Biden’s request to designate South Carolina as the first state to hold the party’s primaries in 2024, arguing that voting in a more diverse state would yield more votes. to African-American voters and would be more representative of the final result.

But New Hampshire Democratic officials confirmed at a news conference that they reject the change in schedule. Anticipating this announcement, Joe Biden had already made it known in October that his name would not appear on the ballot papers.

The state’s Democratic delegates will therefore have the choice between the relatively unknown congressman Dean Phillips, and Marianne Williamson, an author of books on personal development, both very far from Joe Biden in the polls.
