For the Innsbruck expert Peter Huemer, “one of the most remarkable discoveries in the world of butterflies of the last few decades”.

The approximately 11,000 known butterfly species in Europe are considered to be well researched. The discovery of a new species that also belongs to a new genus is all the more surprising. Researchers from Germany, Austria and Great Britain described the “Dalmatian winter moth” (Mirlatia arcuata) for the first time in the journal “ZooKeys”.
To create the genus name “Mirlatia,” the stems of two Latin words were combined, which loosely translates to “bring a surprise.”
