The first death of this year’s flu season occurred in LA County.
County public health officials announced on the 15th that an elderly patient with multiple underlying conditions and who had not received a flu shot this year died from the flu for the first time in the 2023-24 flu season.
“Most people recover from the flu without complications, but this death is a reminder that the flu can be a serious illness,” the health department said in a press release.
The health department also warned, “The most common complication from the flu is pneumonia, and it can worsen underlying conditions such as heart disease or asthma.”
In the United States, thousands of people nationwide are hospitalized or die from flu-related illnesses every year.
The Public Health Department said that in LA County, the number of infections is currently at a similar level to last year, but is showing an increasing trend over recent years.
