It’s a surprising statistic that was given by retail security expert Tom Symons to HUMO magazine. In fact, according to the expert, a quarter of supermarket customers try to leave at least one product in their basket so as not to have to pay for it. After millions of checks carried out by Tom Symons over the last five years, the expert has delivered numerous figures which may surprise.
In fact, we also learn that 60% of beer bins purchased in supermarkets are not scanned by cashiers, allowing customers to leave with them without paying but also representing a huge financial pit for retailers. “This rather shocking result is the result of a month-long inspection that we carried out in a Belgian hypermarket at the beginning of the year. The retailer thought he was selling around 70 packs of beer a week, but in reality 180 had left their shelves. 110 bins of beer were in fact not paid for,” explained the expert, also owner of CaddyChek, a security and detection system for supermarket trolleys.
To steal these bins, however, customers do not show any particular creativity. The technique is simple: leave the beer tray at the bottom of the shopping cart. “As a cashier, it is physically impossible to see the entire contents of a shopping cart,” the expert explains to Het Laatste Nieuws. “During our enforcement action, we naturally intervened when someone left with an unpaid record. The customer caught in the act would usually respond straight away: ‘Oops, I forgot to mention that to the cashier, sorry’. Some even raised their voices by declaring: ‘It’s up to the store staff to check everything, not us’.”
