They found a link between lack of sleep and neuronal dysfunction
Scientists from Binzhou Medical College conducted a study and concluded that chronic sleep deprivation reduces pleiotrophin protein (PTN) levels, which causes neuronal dysfunction and further neurodegenerative diseases. The study results appeared in The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS).
Numerous studies have shown that lack of sleep causes neurological damage in the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory. To understand the mechanisms that underlie this phenomenon, scientists from China analyzed what changes in RNA are triggered by insomnia. RNA is a ribonucleic acid, one of three molecules found in the cell nucleus, and is involved in the coding and expression of genes.
Scientists have found that lack of sleep leads to a decrease in the level of pleiotropin (PTN) in mice, this protein is encoded by the PTN gene. It was found that a decrease in PTN levels causes neuronal dysfunction in the hippocampus. Scientists have stated that this process is characteristic of neurodegenerative diseases, including dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, in humans, writes Gazeta.Ru.
We previously reported that scientists in Spain discovered that all centenarians have common character traits – those who have a chance of living more than 100 years.
