A group of students from the National University of Buenos Aires (UBA) stated that They no longer feel safe in the classrooms since they began to notice a growth in anti-Semitic expressions in the university environment. The situation was triggered by the attack carried out by Hamas on October 7, which unleashed the war with Israel in the Middle East.

Through a statement, UBA students detailed several episodes, among them one of the most resonant occurred in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters weeks ago.

According to what they expressed, Palestinian flags, posters and anti-Semitic graffiti with swastikas appeared in the Puán building, with more than 200 kidnapped people of all ages and nationalities, including 21 Argentines.

In other faculties, meanwhile, documents were found that supported the actions of Hamas. “They scold us in the hallways, they call us shitty Jews and the Faculty does not intervene”said a student who remained anonymous.

“Jewish students do not feel safe at universities. From swastikas in the university of the massacre (sic), posters claiming the murders, torture and rapes of October 7 in the economics faculty, to physical attacks and calls for death on US campuses, universities became hostile places for us. We unite to ensure that in our country it does not reach the levels it reached in the northern country. We have a voice, we are here, and together we are stronger,” they published from the “Exactas por Israel” social networks.

The publications of a group of UBA students.

For this reason, on October 12, they sent a public letter to Dean Ricardo Manetti and all the professors, in which it was recalled that the UBA, by Resolution RES-UBA 287/2020, adhered to the definition of anti-Semitism, a fact that coincidentally It took place on October 7, three years before the massacre.

The resolution published at the time by the official UBA site states that “anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which can be expressed as hatred towards Jews. The physical and rhetorical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed at Jewish or non-Jewish people. “Jews and/or their property, the institutions of the Jewish community and their places of worship”.

A survivor told how Hamas fighters paraded “with severed heads” of Israeli victims

The group of students pointed out that these facts are being replicated in other faculties, such as Economics, Exact Sciences and Medicine.

Some of the young people, under the motto ““Never Again is Now”, organized to put together posters with a QR code to provide information regarding what is happening in the Middle East under the title “Let’s Militate for Peace.” However, that material was torn off just minutes following being attached.

Then they sent a second letter to the Dean of Philosophy, and as indicated in the distributed letter, the Dean received the students and promised to issue a statement replicating the one issued by the authorities of the University of Buenos Aires to which the faculty belongs.
