A user identified as theEdmard stated, in um post no reddithaving received a iPhone 15 Pro Max own counterfeit Apple with the embedded Android operating system. In his report, he assured that he had purchased the device through official site of the company in the United Kingdom, and even the purchase tracking worked perfectly.
This case — bizarre to say the least — began last Saturday, when theEdmard received his delivery, made by Dynamic Parcel Distribution (DPD). The first sign that something was wrong came when he opened the (apparently legitimate) iPhone box and saw a torn sticker on the inside, suggesting that someone had already broken the packaging’s seal.
Even so, the buyer proceeded with the unboxing, as the included model actually looked like it was a 256GB iPhone 15 Pro Max in natural titanium color — exactly the specification he chose. That’s when the second red alert came to light: the smartphone already had a protective film installed! And detail: it appeared to be a film from an iPhone model still equipped with a notch. ????
At first, theEdmard considered the possibility that Apple had sent him a return unit instead of a 100% new device, but it was only following turning on the device that everything became clear: the iPhone 15 Pro Max in question was, in fact, , a very cheap Android smartphone with a launcher made to make the operating system look like iOS.
First, theEdmard noticed different lighting on the screen, especially around Dynamic Island (Dynamic Island), making it very clear that it is an LCD displayLiquid crystal displayor liquid crystal display.”>1 instead of OLEDOrganic light-emitting diodeor organic light-emitting diode.”>2. Furthermore, the device also had a “chin” at the bottom of the screen — a very common detail among Android devices with an “infinite screen” design and which still use LCD displays.
If there was still any doubt that the device was, in fact, a counterfeit iPhone, the situation became even clearer when the smartphone finally turned on. After going through a very poorly done configuration wizard, he was finally able to check the “iPhone” operating system, which was full of bugs, in addition to coming with apps like Facebook, TikTok and YouTube pre-installed.
The device even had an option for the user to log in with their Apple ID in the Settings app — a huge red flag when it comes to privacy, as your data might end up literally anywhere in this case (considering it is a counterfeit device). . The same thing can be said for pre-installed social media apps and even Wi-Fi connection, as device manufacturers might use it as a way to gain access to the buyer’s network.
In his Reddit account, he warned others regarding the privacy and security dangers involved with these counterfeit smartphones, urging them to remain vigilant during their purchases. He also spoke regarding the possibility that more lay people had gone through the same experience and continued to use the device normally.
Furthermore, he explained that he had already opened a complaint with Apple support, who promised to contact him in the next few days to resolve the situation. He also contacted DPD, which assured that his order was not opened at any time — therefore suggesting that the exchange for a counterfeit smartphone would have taken place at another stage of delivery.
Obviously, Apple would never send a counterfeit iPhone to its customers, which leads us to believe that theEdmard’s device would have been exchanged by someone at some point between purchase and receipt of the order by DPD, or even upon delivery — that’s if this story is true (which it appears to be) to begin with.
Bizarre, no?
