Diabetes, a chronic disease that affects millions of people, has increased considerably in recent years. According to the Colombian Ministry of Health, more than 1.4 million people were diagnosed with diabetes in 2021, affecting approximately 3% of the Colombian population. Between 2000 and 2019, diabetes mortality rates increased by 3%, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO).
On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, which is commemorated every November 14, it is crucial to raise awareness in society regarding this condition and offer guidelines for its management, especially with regard to exercise. Here we present five fundamental recommendations:
Know Your Type of Diabetes: The disease is classified into different types, the most common being type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Understanding the specific type you have is essential to tailoring your exercise approach appropriately. Perform Aerobic Exercise: Aerobic exercise, such as walking, running, or cycling, is beneficial for people with diabetes. However, it is crucial to adjust the intensity and duration according to individual medical recommendations. Recording and Monitoring: Keeping a record of physical activity and monitoring blood glucose levels before and following exercise are essential practices. This allows the exercise plan to be adjusted according to the body’s response.Prior Medical Consultation: Before starting any exercise program, it is imperative to consult with a health professional. This step is especially relevant for people with diabetes, as each individual has specific needs and restrictions. Incorporate Stretching and Warming Up: An appropriate exercise session for people with diabetes should include 10 minutes of stretching and 5 minutes of aerobic warm-up before exercise. main activity. In addition, it is recommended to dedicate 5 to 10 minutes to low-intensity exercises at the end of the session.
Alejandra Husley Beltrán Lizarazo, Intermediate Risk Management professional at EPS Famisanar, recommended activities such as walking, running and cycling for people with diabetes, always taking into account the medical history of each individual. Additionally, she stressed the importance of maintaining a training log and regularly consulting with the doctor to ensure a safe approach tailored to the specific needs of each diabetic patient.
The expert also provided five recommendations to keep in mind before, during and following exercise:
1. Check blood glucose before practicing sports.
2. Do not inject insulin into a muscle region that will be exposed to great effort.
3. Avoid physical exercise at the time of the maximum peak of insulin action.
4. Control blood glucose during and following exercise.
5. Drink water, two hours before starting to exercise and during sports practice.
World Diabetes Day remembers the constant care of this chronic disease. Exercise, when practiced appropriately and safely, can be a valuable tool in diabetes management.
