Along the Ring, the construction sites definitely never stop. While a titanic cycle bridge – the largest in Belgium – is being built at NATO and Avenue Léopold IIIanother construction site is emerging a few hundred meters away, in the extension of the axis.
The Werkvennootschap announces that it has filed a permit to completely redevelop the Ring and A201 interchange (extension of avenue Léopold III), which notably allows motorists to branch off towards Zaventem airport.
The crossroads is intended to become a “Single Point Interchange”, a system which does not exist anywhere else in Flanders. While currently several lanes overlook the ring road, there will only be one main bridge. Traffic will be governed by intelligent traffic lights.
The footprint will be reduced. The Woluwe valley should be revalued thanks to the recovered space. Likewise, cycling infrastructure will be built.
In total, the bill for this project amounts to 250 million euros. Once the permit is obtained, the work is expected to last approximately 3.5 years.
Besides this exchanger, the Flemish authorities are preparing to renovate the entire Ring, between Zaventem and Grand-Bigard. Colossal work which will be carried out by zone. The first stage of this project costing more than 3 billion is planned in Zaventem, and should begin in the fall of 2025. Then will come the Vilvoorde area, then Wemmel and finally Grand-Bigard. The total completion of the project is estimated at 2035.
