The Belgian road safety institute, Vias, invited political parties in a press release on Tuesday to adopt “as quickly as possible” the 12 measures in its memorandum in order to “reduce the number of road victims”.

Here are the 12 measures requested

that technical margin of radars is lowered from “6 km/h (for speeds up to 100 km/h) and 6% beyond 100 km/h” to 3 km/h or 3%; that section radars are generalized on construction sites. that good motorists are rewarded. that the helmet and fluorescent jacket during night outings are obligatory for users of “European approved” scooters. that the zero tolerance be applied in matters of drunk driving. one points license be established. only cameras are used to detect the use of GSM while driving. one digital driving license be put in place. that mobile police checks are not no longer announced. that the laughing gas is banned over the entire territory. that drug checks become systematic in the event of a bodily accident. that the readability of theroad development is improved.

With these measures, the organization hopes to help Belgium achieve “the objective of a maximum of 320 deaths set during the last General Review of Road Safety for 2030”. She recalls that last year, “540 people lost their lives on Belgian roads” and that if nothing is done, “it will not be possible to get there”.

During the first six months of 2023, the number of deaths on Belgian roads nevertheless fell by 21% compared to the same period last year, according to its latest road safety barometer published by the end of August.
