ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Wil Lutz got a second chance at a game-winning field goal attempt as the clock expired and the Denver Broncos won their third straight game by beating an erratic Bills of Buffalo, who turned turnovers wildly, by a score of 24-22 on Monday night.
Lutz had missed the attempt by sending his kick deflected to the right side of the post with four seconds left, but in the action the Bills (5-5) had 12 players on the field, so there was a second opportunity to hit the goal. 36 yard attempt. Lutz recovered from his own blunders in a game in which he missed an extra point and was unable to attempt another when the person responsible for holding the ball, Riley Dixon, lost control of the ball before the kick.
Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen then scampered six yards to give the Bills the lead for the first time. Russell Wilson followed with a 10-play drive that went 57 yards to set up Lutz’s field goal attempt. The key play of that offense came on third and 10 to go, when Wilson, under pressure, sent the high pass looking to connect with Jerry Jeudy, who was prevented from searching for the ball by defender Taron Johnson.
Johnson was called for pass interference, giving Denver the ball at the Buffalo 17-yard line.
The Broncos (4-5) have won three in a row and four of six since losing 70-20 to Miami.
