In a recent study published in the journal Behavioral Processes, Brittany Florkiewicz, an assistant professor of psychology at Lyon College, and Lauren Scott, a medical student at the University of Kansas Medical Center, observed and analyzed the facial expressions of domestic cats in a cat cafe in Los Angeles (Los Angeles is a city in the United States located in southern California, on the Pacific coast….). This research (Scientific research refers primarily to all the actions undertaken with a view to…) made it possible to identify 276 distinct facial expressions, number (The notion of number in linguistics is treated in the article “Number… ) high compared to other species.

Contrary to the individualistic and impassive image often attributed to cats, the results indicate that 45% of these expressions are friendly in nature and 37% clearly express aggression. The remaining 18% fall between these two extremes. However, the precise meaning of many expressions remains undetermined, which opens the way to future research.

The researchers excluded non-communicative expressions like chewing, yawning or simply breathing. They coded every unique expression observed during their nightly visits to the café, where they recorded the interactions between around 50 adoptable cats.

This discovery highlights the complexity of communication (intra-psychic, interpersonal communication, etc.) among domestic cats and questions their reputation for antisociality. It also highlights the importance of non-verbal communication among felines and its potential as a field of scientific research.
