Buy a plane ticket on AirFrance.fr or a sofa on Ikea.fr, and receive confirmation on WhatsApp or Messenger, instead of the traditional SMS. These new uses in e-commerce are exploding, to the great dismay of good old telecom operators, according to a new study by Juniper Research on 60 countries published Monday. By 2028, telcos will lose $3 billion in revenue as brands turn to messaging to communicate with their customers.
The phenomenon is certainly not new. Born 30 years ago, SMS began to lose ground to messaging following the creation of Facebook in 2004. In France, the decline has been structural since 2016 and has further accentuated since Covid. Last year, “only” 110 billion SMS messages were sent in France, a figure down 7.5%, according to Arcep, the telecoms regulator.
