Nepal will ban Chinese social media platform TikTok. The app would have a bad influence on “social harmony” in the country because it receives so many hate messages, Nepalese officials say.
TikTok is frequently misused in the Asian country. For example, 1,600 incidents of cybercrime have been registered in the past four years, according to local media. According to the government, TikTok encourages the spread of hate messages.
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Rekha Sharma did not say on Monday when exactly the ban would come into effect. “If it is technically feasible, the ban might come into effect today,” she said.
Politicians from opposition parties and some members of the current coalition criticize the ban and believe it goes once morest freedom of expression. A few days ago, the Nepalese government announced that it would introduce more guidelines to increase control over social media in the country and their content.
In some other countries, TikTok is already partially or completely banned, such as India. TikTok has been banned four times in Pakistan. These were lifted once more and once more.
