Ports in Australia begin operations after cyber attack

Three days following a cyber attack, several major ports in Australia have resumed operations. The container terminals in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle are back in operation, port operator DP World said on Monday. The company expects to handle 5,000 containers at the four ports throughout the day. According to industry experts, this corresponds almost to the usual daily volume.

Investigations into the cyberattack and measures to protect systems might cause some “temporary disruptions” in the coming days, DP World said.

The port operator had to interrupt the internet connection of its transshipment terminals in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle and stop operations on Friday due to “unauthorized access”. According to Home Secretary O’Neill, DP World handles “nearly 40 percent of goods entering or leaving our country.”

Cybersecurity experts say inadequate security measures and the accumulation of sensitive customer data have made Australia a lucrative target for hackers. The Australian government created the position of national cybersecurity coordinator in July following a series of high-profile cyberattacks that affected the personal data of millions of people.

Last year, 76,000 crime incidents were reported to the Australian Cybersecurity Center. But according to the experts, the number of unreported cases is likely to be significantly higher.
